There is a sense of excitement in the air this week at Anfi, in fact it is all over Gran Canaria. That’s because this Thursday, the 30th of May, is Canarian National Day or Día de Canarias.
Canarian Day is a public holiday throughout the Canary Islands, meaning schools, public buildings and almost all shops will be closed, even those within the tourist areas.
It is a day of celebration, a day to be spent with family and friends and one thing is certain, the Canarian people know how to have fun on this festive day!
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Gran Canaria during the run up to Canarian Day you will notice that shops and supermarkets are beautifully decorated with Canarian artefacts. Many people will be wearing traditional costume, and the beaches, parks and picnic areas in the mountains will be full of people enjoying their ‘fiesta’ day.
In the pretty fishing village of Arguineguin, a 5 minute drive from Anfi, there will be celebrations taking place in the main square, Plaza Pérez Gáldos.
From 18h onwards you will find a handicraft and gastronomy fair, followed by live music from a local drumming band.
The evening celebrations will then continue with a folklore show acted out by members of the local community.
The Canarian people take great pride in their national day and almost everyone from tiny babes in arms, to teenagers, through to the village elders will be dressed in beautiful traditional Canarian costumes.
If you are visiting Gran Canaria this week take a stroll down to Arguineguin or hop on one of the Global buses, which stop directly opposite Anfi and join in the Fiesta.

Here at Anfi we are always keen to support our local sports heroes and in the spotlight this month is local motorcyclist Javier Rodriguez, as he takes part in the challenging Sardinia Rally.
Anfi is sponsoring Rodriguez, who is from Telde in Gran Canaria, in the race which starts June 1st and ends June 5th and covers 1,500km. We will also be following the race progress daily and will be keeping you up-to-date with regular postings on the Anfi Facebook page.
Rodriguez will be riding a KTM 250 EXC bike throughout the challenging race, which is characterised by its continuous changes of direction and slopes.
Rodriguez is feeling confident about his pre-race condition, “I’m feeling fit and excited about my participation in the race”.
He continued, “I have to continually have one eye on the road-book, the other eye on the trip, and at the same time be aware of the actual driving. Never-the-less, I believe I am at my maximum level.”
Remember to keep an eye on Facebook for real-time updates on the Sardinia Rally.
Gran Canaria is famed for its fresh and wide variety of seafood, the coastline is dotted with restaurants and in some cases whole villages specialising in fresh fish and shellfish.

Coming up this week is the Norwegian National Day a day which, due to Anfi’s strong Norwegian connection, is celebrated with aplomb right here in Anfi.
Each year on the 17th of May, a national holiday in Norway, there are parades and celebrations all over Norway and within Norwegian communities throughout the world.
We are going to be hooking up with the Norwegian School of Gran Canaria to celebrate this special day. Students from the school, bearing banners and flags, will march from their school, situated opposite Anfi in the Barranco de la Verga, down to the Anfi Plaza.
The parade will begin at 10hrs and arrive at Anfi approximately 30 minutes later.
Down on the Anfi Plaza we will be embracing all things Norwegian and there will be stalls serving Norwegian snacks and drinks.
The atmosphere on Norwegian Day is full of fun so if you are at Anfi this weekend make sure you pop down to the Plaza from 10hrs onwards to join in the celebrations!
If you are in Gran Canaria this weekend Playa del Ingles is where all the fun is taking place!
The annual event of Gay Pride is currently in full swing and this weekend sees the culmination of a week of celebration.
Today, Friday the 10th of May, you’ll find the Drag Queen Gala Show interspersed with 90’s tribute bands, on the main stage of the Yumbo Shopping Centre.
Saturday the 11th will see the final main parade winding its merry way through the streets of Playa del Ingles from 15h onwards, ending in the Yumbo Shopping Centre where the entertainment will continue on the main stage.
