Have you ever dreamt about leaving your job, packing up and moving away from your homeland to settle in sunnier climes?
This is the dream of many people, and the dream that Anfi representative Peter Grusdat. I caught up with Peter to hear his story and discover what brought him to Gran Canaria and to work at Anfi.
A New Beginning
Peter, who is from Munich in Germany, has been living in Gran Canaria for 5 years, although he is a relative ‘newbie’ at Anfi, having worked here for only 6 months. He is currently working as a representative within the German team and is loving his new job.
Unlike the majority of the sales staff that work in Anfi, Peter had never worked in sales or in the Vacation Ownership field before coming to Anfi, but within a short time he has settled and is now thrilled with his new vocation.
“I love working at Anfi. It’s an impressive resort but more than anything I enjoy meeting new and interesting people and my job here allows for that every day. I like getting to know the clients discovering what they are looking for from their holiday experience. It’s never boring that’s for sure!”
A Life of Martial Arts
As well as working full-time at Anfi, Peter runs a successful Martial Arts Academy ‘WT Academy Canarias’, situated in El Tablero, near Maspalomas in the south of Gran Canaria.
He teaches the ancient martial art of Wing Tsun, which was practised by Bruce Lee and Escrima or Filipino Stick Fighting.
Peter is a master or Sifu, and has been practising martial arts for over 24 years, including Taekwondo, Kickboxing and Thai kickboxing, and before coming to Gran Canaria he run his own successful academy in Munich.
After coming to work in Gran Canaria, in the outdoor pursuits field, Peter was soon setting up his own Martial Arts Academy on the island.
He now teaches over 70 students, in both group and private lessons. His students are aged from 15 years and upwards and come from a wide range of backgrounds. Many of Peter’s students work in the Canarian police force, where Wing Tsum is highly regarded as a method of self-defence.
“Wing Tsun and Escrima encourage a healthy balanced lifestyle as they are closely linked to Buddhism and Taoism, they also promote flexibility and teach the body to move more fluidly. Anyone over the age of 15 can learn these arts and they do not contain high kick movements which some people find off putting in certain martial arts.”
In addition, to his work Peter is a keen motorcycle enthusiast, and in his spare time he likes to ride his beloved chopper motorbike through along the hairpin bend roads of Gran Canaria.
So how does Peter see his life on Gran Canaria evolving?
“I want to continue working at Anfi and developing my career here further. This is a completely new direction for me, so there is a lot to learn. I am also planning to set up another martial arts academy in Fuerteventura, which will be run by a former student. In addition to this I am overseeing academies being opened in Las Palmas, again by my students. “
