Have you visited the delightful fishing town of Puerto de Mogan?
Up until very recently the only was to get to this charming village was by boat or along the hair-raising coast road. But last week the new motorway tunnel opened in the Tauro valley, meaning the once roughly 30 minute drive from Puerto Rico now takes only 5 minutes!
So there’s never been a better time to explore Puero de Mogan.
Despite the surrounding hotel developments, Puerto de Mogán still maintains its unique charm. Called Little Venice due to the narrow waterways which intersect the labyrinth of streets that house quaint ‘fisherman’s cottages’, this colourfully picturesque village continues to delight new and returning visitors.
A wide selection of restaurants surround the marina area, allowing wonderful views of anchored yachts, crystal waters bursting with fish, the clear sky beyond – as well as providing a great spot for people watching. Restaurant prices are reasonable, with many offering 2 or 3 courses starting from 10€ – fresh locally caught fish is a little more expensive but it can’t be recommended highly enough.
Stroll around the maze of streets just behind the harbour and you’ll find an interesting array of good quality gift and arts and crafts shops – well worth a look. Here too, you can enjoy a coffee in a shaded street café – often a welcome midday break from the perpetual sunshine this corner of the island receives.
If you like shopping, on Fridays there is a huge and very popular open-air market where you’ll find an exhaustive list of goods: jewellery, local crafts and pottery, African carvings and drums, second-hand books, homemade table cloths, accessories, beach towels, clothing, sarongs, swim wear and fruit and vegetables.
Quality varies so be sure to shop around and haggle to get the best price.
If, instead of retail therapy you prefer a bit of sun worshipping, you’ll find a delightful beach at the end of the port area. A veritable suntrap all year round, you’ll find sun loungers, parasols and water sports on this lovely little sheltered bay of golden sand – perfect for safe swimming.
