Gran Canaria is famed for its fresh and wide variety of seafood, the coastline is dotted with restaurants and in some cases whole villages specialising in fresh fish and shellfish.
The bustling fishing village of Arguinegiun, a five-minute drive from Anfi, is a very popular haunt for those seeking popular fish restaurants, as is the pretty harbour of Puerto Mogan, which you can read more about right here.
However, some of Gran Canaria’s best fish restaurants are in the north of the island and none more so than the tiny area of San Cristobal situated just before Las Palmas, the island’s capital.
San Cristobal is situated directly opposite the ‘Hospital Insular’ on the main coastal road the GC1 and sits almost on the water, so close is it to the harbour wall.
This weekend San Cristobal is highlighting its importance within the fishing community and in a gastrological sense with a 3-day event entitled ‘San Cristobal Sabor a Mar’ or ‘Taste of the Sea’.
Beginning this Friday 24th May, the whole weekend is dedicated to the sea and its delights. Everyday will see a ‘gastronomy route’ being held, whereby you can sample a dish of Tapas and enjoy a drink in each participating bar or restaurant for only €2.
Favourite dishes will include ‘Pescado Portuguesa’ or Portuguese Fish, small pieces of boneless white fish cooked in a rich tomato sauce with red pepper and garlic seasoned with bay and fresh parsley, or delicately fried fresh calamari’s with a wedge of lemon. Or why not be adventurous and try some melt- in-the-mouth octopus or pulpo seasoned with paprika, oregano and rock salt, and of course there will be the famous Canarian potatoes with the fiery Mojo sauce!
As well as the gastronomy route you can also enjoy a handicraft market, water-sports, exhibitions on traditional fishing methods, a fish market, children’s workshops, as well as live music and folk dancing.
If you want to experience the essence of Gran Canaria, eat some amazing seafood, and visit a lesser-known part of our beautiful island, we urge you to visit San Cristobal this weekend!
Any Las Palmas bound bus will drop you off at San Cristobal, just get off at the ‘Hospital Insular’ stop and head for the harbour.
