Anfi Tauro Golf Course was converted in a special trial track for the Dakar Challenge yesterday as local pilot Jorge Gomez gave Anfi Members, guests and local media a special demonstration of his driving skills.
The fifty-five-year old is training hard for his third South American competition that will see him cross gruelling terrain through Argentina, Chile and Bolivia where he’ll be spending up to five straight hours a day on the back of his BMW450.
Apart from physical fitness training, the Canarian pilot told reporters about the importance of mental preparation and mental agility to face the rigours of the upcoming race.
According to Gomez, Dakar demands, “A relaxed manner” whilst always concentrating on the road to avoid accidents. He also highlights the dangers of getting “drunk on the speed” and of becoming distracted by the beautiful landscape and “missing a rock or pothole”.
When he revs up for the first leg on the January 2014, Gomez will be in even better spirits than during his previous competitions since, on this occasion, his wife Carolina will be joining him.
He said, “Caroline has always encouraged me and this time she’ll be with me to lend her emotional and practical support. After so many hours alone on the bike it gets lonely and she’ll be there at the base camps to encourage me as well as helping me with the kilometre ledgers”.
Sponsoring Gomez for a third year, Manager of Hotel Division and Anfi Tauro Golf, Luis Martinez said, “Anfi continues to support quality sports and we all wish Jorge the very best of success in Dakar”.
