If there’s one sure way to way to discover the culture of a country, it’s by visiting the local weekly market – and Gran Canaria has a wide selection of great markets for you to choose from.
The weekly produce market is where many Canarians head to stock up on their seasonal fruit and vegetables, alongside locally made cheeses, salted meats and olives. Even though the big supermarket chains often offer cheaper produce, for many people, the quality and the atmosphere of the local market cannot be beaten.
The weekly market at Arguineguin, situated a 5 minute drive from Anfi, is a vibrant and colourful affair, where you can buy foodstuffs, clothes, jewellery, shoes and a wealth of handicrafts. For something different, head to Las Palmas, the islands cosmopolitan capital city, for the Sunday handicraft market. Here artisans from all over Gran Canaria display their beautifully crafted wares – traditional pottery, lacework, paintings, wood carvings, palm-leaf weaved goods and leather goods alongside homemade foodstuffs, local cheeses an delicately prepared pastries and breads.
The Sunday market is held in the picturesque Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, located behind the Santa Ana Cathedral in the area of Vegueta, here you’ll also find narrow cobbled streets, historical architecture and the popular museum of Christopher Columbus.
Combine a your trip to the market with a gentle stroll around the old town and soak up the wonderful atmosphere Las Palmas has to offer. Or maybe combine your visit to the market with a trip inland to the countryside…
