This year Anfi is celebrating a very special anniversary, it’s 25 years since the first boulders were excavated from the barren hillside which was to become the setting to the iconic resort of Anfi del Mar as we know it today.
It was some years later, that the first prospective clients came to visit Anfi, although in the meantime, word had spread throughout the vacation ownership industry that something big was happening in Gran Canaria – a resort that would change the face of the industry forever was taking shape in the Canary Islands.
Soon professionals from all over Europe began flocking to Anfi in the hope of securing a position in the then fledgling company. Kim Gomez, a dynamic, experienced and enthusiastic young man, already working in Gran Canaria within the industry, was one of those professionals.
We caught up with Kim, who has returned to Anfi after a few years break, to hear all about those exciting early years at Anfi.
In the Beginning
After meeting with Anfi founder, Born Lyng, and hearing of his plans and hopes for Anfi del Mar, Kim was convinced to take a management role within the German team.
The year was 1992.
Danish born Kim, stayed at Anfi for six years, managing and building up the German team and he fondly recalls when he finalised the very first sale of an Anfi apartment.
“It was very exciting, the staff in those days didn’t have a lot to show the clients, the resort was under construction, no swimming pools, no restaurants, and no white sand beach – we had only a show apartment and a dream to share with clients.”
“Despite the lack of facilities, the German couple loved the concept Anfi was offering and they had faith in the staff they encountered – they become Anfi’s first ever Members.”
“Champagne was popped and there were celebrations all around!”
“It was a moment I will never forget!”, remembers Kim.
Kim soon moved up through the ranks of Anfi. His experience, team management skills and likeable personality steered him onwards and he soon took over the challenging role of German Manager.
“In the early years the majority of the business at Anfi was with the German market. To cope with the huge amounts of interest from people visiting the resort, our team swelled from 17 to 132 staff, with 11 assistants including myself managing the team.”
Kim’s motto has surely played a big part in his success, he also feels it has enabled him to return to the vacation ownership industry and succeed once again.
“It’s nice to be important, but it’s much more important to be nice!”
After spending six years at Anfi, Kim decided to return to his native Denmark where he developed and ran a successful training and management company and met his wife Malene.
He is also a keen cook and before his career within the vacation membership industry Kim worked as a professional chef for ten years based on oil riggs all over the world. His passion for good food has stayed with him.
Kim also practises Martial Arts and he is currently studying a form of Kung Foo called Wing Chun, which focuses on self-defence. It’s his way of keeping fit and relaxing after his busy working day at Anfi.
Gran Canaria Calls Again
During his time away from Anfi, Kim kept in close contact with many of his ex-colleagues and in 2010 he was encouraged to return to the vacation ownership industry in Gran Canaria once again.
It wasn’t long before he was back at Anfi and working as a manager in the German team.
Kim has a strong emotional connection with Anfi, a feeling which is common amongst those of us who have been here from the start of the Anfi dream.
“I love Anfi. I had the pleasure of knowing the first Members here! I had the honour of knowing Bjorn Lyng, our founder. I saw his dream grow and flourish and I grew with it. It feels good to be part of Anfi’s history and to be back here again. I identify with Anfi’s core values and its vision for the future and this is a feeling I hope to impart to my team.”
It’s great to have you back Kim!
