My Anfi Competition helps Pequeño Valiente - Little Brave Ones
16/12/2011 - As a culmination of a successful second year of the “My Anfi Competition” - where we invite members and guests to send in their favourite photos of their Anfi holidays – we decided it would be an excellent idea to produce a calendar featuring each month’s winners.
Our initial idea was to sell the calendar for 1€ and donate the profits to a local charity, so after considering a few deserving local causes – we decided to invite Pequeño Valiente in for a meeting.
Pequeño Valiente is a non-profit organization which was set up by parents of children with cancer.
The charity’s aim is to help sick children with cancer and their families by providing them with all the necessary support they need to improve their quality of life throughout the illness.
From the start of our meeting we were impressed by the sincerity and the passion of the organisers but what really touched our hearts and galvanised us into helping them as much as possible was their answer to the question: How would you spend the money that Anfi could raise?
The organisation’s staff social worker, a determined blues-beater, visits the children’s cancer ward in Las Palmas’ Materno Hospital on a daily basis to ensure that any problems or difficulties are solved. The ward’s a specialist unit serving not only patients from Gran Canaria, but also from Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Although nobody likes to call a hospital their place of residence, Pequeño Valiente aims to provide all the home comforts children require.
Sadly, as soon as they learn that the offspring of their staff is unwell – many employers opt for the “easy” option of dismissing their employees. So from the offset families often have to endure very serious financial burdens as well as facing the trauma of their child’s illness.
Since parents take turns in staying at their child’s hospital bedside 24-7 – supermarket vouchers donated by PV are a great help as are the complimentary bus passes. Pequeño Valiente also organize monthly get-togethers where families undergoing similiar ordeals can unwind together. These have included watching Atletico Madrid when they visited Gran Canaria in the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup), local heroes Gran Canaria 2014 on the basketball court and the circus when it comes to town.
At present they run a project to support the parents by spending a few hours in the afternoon with their children. This allows the parents the opportunity to recharge their batteries. Cancer drains carers as well as patients.
Also a qualified teacher is on hand to offer tuition to the children with cancer in order for them to continue with their studies. The philosophy of Pequeño Valiente is to help them live as normal life as possible.
The association also runs craft projects in the hospital. This helps to break up the long, monotonous afternoons. PV’s philosophy is to be a friend amongst the shadows, offering help where it’s not expected.
So, a huge thank you to all the participants in the My Anfi Photo Competition over the last 12 months for enabling us to produce this calendar and help this worthwhile cause.
A special thanks goes to the following winners:
